Since
1969, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) has
certified practitioners in the safety field as a peer certification
board. Over 15,000 persons have achieved the Certified Safety
Professional® (CSP®) designation. As outlined in the charter,
the specific functions of BCSP are to evaluate the academic
and experience qualifications of safety professionals and to
administer certification examinations to those safety professionals
meeting the appropriate criteria.
BCSP
does not require preapproval of courses for recertification.
However, the CSP® receives Continuance of Certification (COC)
credits equal to the number of assigned CEU(s) for each relevant
course. These relevant courses address topics in accident
prevention, occupational health hazards, fire prevention/protection,
product safety and liability, system safety, risk analysis,
hazardous materials, etc.
The
current BCSP Board of Directors is composed of thirteen Directors
representing a cross-section of the safety profession and
serving without remuneration. Six of these Directors are nominated
by BCSPs six membership organizations: American Society
of Safety Engineers, American Industrial Hygiene Association,
Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Institute of Industrial
Engineers, System Safety Society and National Safety Council.
Six Directors are chosen from the profession at large. One
Director, the Public Director, represents the public interest.
All BCSP Board Directors hold the CSP® except for the Public
Director.
