Description
This course is intended to provide a comprehensive survey of ingredients fundamental to the cosmetic industry including decorative and personal care products. The presentations will emphasize current trends in the selection of cosmetic ingredients. The chemistry and technology of cosmetic raw materials will be related to their behavioural properties as utilized in the construction of stable functional systems. In this way, it is intended to generate a better understanding of the contributions of ingredients to the performance of finished product formulations. Key ingredients to be examined will include emulsifiers, surfactants, fatty chemicals, emollients and moisturizers, powders, polymers, humectants, thickeners, preservatives and numerous other speciality chemicals. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing and dealing with problem areas associated with the use of various ingredients. Safety considerations and other pertinent matters which can influence ingredient selection will be included in these discussions. The optional first day provides a comprehensive look at the broad spectrum of colors that are used in cosmetic and toiletry products, including standard organic and inorganic colorants as well as pearlescent ones. Starting with discussion of color basics from a physics perspective, it then moves to the selection of colors: regulatory considerations, chemical considerations, aesthetics and economics. Topics such as dispersion, testing and color consistency are discussed, as well as common problems encountered when using color and how to avoid them. The last topic will include a listing of the basic dos and don’ts of using color.
