Biostatistics for the Non-Statistician - Basic

Who Should Attend
This course will benefit medical investigators, research and development scientists, clinical research associates (monitors), and regulatory affairs specialists. It will be of particular value to those involved in the design and analysis of research investigations. The lectures are oriented toward professionals having minimal formal training in statistics or computers. Consequently, no extensive background in mathematics beyond algebra, or in statistics or personal computers will be required.

Description
This program will discuss the fundamental statistical concepts that are essential for professionals operating in a biological or medical environment. The first day will concentrate on the principles/philosophy of statistical usage while the second day will focus on calculation methods and problem solving. The following are examples of the various topics and/or problem areas which will be discussed:

  • How to begin a research investigation—the questions of interest framed in statistical terms
  • Number of subjects required in a clinical trial designed to determine the efficacy of a new compound
  • The best statistical approach for determining whether a new laboratory method is superior to the present method
  • Understanding statistical vocabulary to improve communication with your statistics group.
Participants are asked to bring a hand-held calculator to the course.
