Recovering Energy from the Earth– Geothermal and Oceanic Processes
April 28, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. (ET)
90 Minute Accredited Online Training
Who Should Attend
This online training will benefit professionals in the following industries: energy production and development, conventional and alternative
energy processing, renewable energy production industries, power generation and transmission, onsite and non-distributed power generation
and academia/government power research laboratories.
Job functions that would benefit from the online training include: process energy engineers (chemical, mechanical and electrical) , energy
specialists, process energy auditors, process and technical services managers, alternative and renewable energy specialists and power
engineers. Additionally, engineers, scientists, project managers and technicians who work in departments such as: energy research and
development, commercial development for energy and alternate sources/processes, process evaluation and design, manufacturing, and
operations in industries such as energy production, transformation and utilization will benefit from this training.
Description
Geothermal heat originates from radioactive decay of minerals and from solar energy absorbed at the earth's surface. Current geothermal
power plants have the capacity to generate enough electricity to cover about 0.3% of global demand. Additionally, about 30 GW of direct
geothermal heating capacity is installed for district heating and industrial processes. In this webinar, the limitations and promise of geothermal
power will be presented. Additional sources of heat from the earth such as oceanic thermal will also be addressed.
Module 1:
• Basic Concepts
• Heat Transfer and the Earth's Energy
Balance
Module 2:
• Types of Geothermal Systems and
Exploration Techniques
• Origin of Geothermal Energy
• Exploiting Geothermal Sources
Module 3:
• Examples of Exploited Fields
