Powders: Their Properties and Processing
March 22-24, 2010
Boca Raton, FL

Who Should Attend
The course is designed primarily for those concerned with products developed or manufactured from powdered solids in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and related industries. Most of the material, however, will be general enough to prove valuable to a much wider range of interests including, but not limited to:

    • Scientists
    • Suppliers
    • Technologists

Description
The primary purpose of this course is to review the various properties of powdered solids pertinent to the development and manufacture of the products of the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and allied industries. In particular, the latest experimental techniques and equipment for evaluating important properties of powders will be discussed and related to both the underlying principles and common industrial problems. The different powder processing operations will be discussed and the range of equipment and machinery for each will be critically reviewed.

Each topic will be briefly introduced at a fairly fundamental level, but will then be extended to cover more sophisticated and innovative techniques, emphasizing the practical usefulness whenever relevant. The formal sessions will be supplemented by informal discussion periods. You will be encouraged to raise specific problems.

HALF DAY WORKSHOP
Course attendees are cordially invited to visit the laboratories of instrument manufacturer Quantachrome Instruments on the morning of Thursday March 25 for a half day powder and porous materials characterization workshop. You will be able to conduct powder sampling experiments, particle size analyses, tapped density and true density measurements and to see state-of-the-art surface area, pore size and water sorption DVS instruments first hand.

There is no additional fee for this optional half-day bonus extension, however please indicate your interest when you register for the course so that appropriate arrangements can be made to accommodate all those interested. If interested please note interest on your registration form in the additional comment section.

Quantachrome Instruments is located just 9.5 miles north of the course location (Embassy Suites Hotel) in Boca Raton; detailed driving directions will be provided during the course. Those attendees visiting Quantachrome for the workshop should leave the hotel by 8:30 to arrive by 9am. If you do not have your own car, shared transportation can be provided. The workshop will formally run until 12noon, followed immediately by a light luncheon, to allow visitors ample time to catch afternoon flights home. Note: because of its location, Quantachrome is just 9.5 miles further from Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) than is the Embassy Suites Hotel, but 9.5 miles closer to Palm Beach International Airport (PBI). Limousine transportation from Quantachrome Instruments to either airport can be arranged (2-day advance notice required).
