The program will impart a realistic understanding of the substrates employed in today’s printing markets and show how ink formulations differ in composition for the particular materials processed. Following a brief session of the chemistry that allows inks to adhere to various substrates, the importance of "wetting out" is stressed in obtaining good ink-to-substrate properties. The role of surface tension in achieving such characteristics as adhesion, gloss, etc., is explained. The course will present a comparison of the properties and respective uses of aqueous and non-water based inks and review the role of different additives to ink. Participants will learn how to compare various analytical methods. There will be ample opportunity for discussion and attendees are urged to bring samples of printing or ink problems
