Description
This broad spectrum, overview course will cover the science and technology of various chemical processes during papermaking operations. These processes are generally grouped under the name of “wet-end chemistry.” Fibers are primary raw materials for making paper. Inorganic fillers, water soluble polymers, surfactants, latex, alum and a number of other chemicals are used during the papermaking process. These chemicals are added either to achieve desired paper properties or to improve papermaking process efficiency.
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the principles and techniques involved in wet-end chemistry. The scientific basics (physical chemistry, colloid and surface chemistry, physics, fluid mechanics, etc.) of wet-end chemistry will be introduced to the extent needed to impart a practical working knowledge of the principles. A good scientific base will be instrumental for a focus on the practical applications of wet-end chemistry in papermaking.
The evening session will concentrate on problems and topics of specific interest to participants (these items can be discussed without making reference to the source). Details of problems should be provided to the Course Director during the first day of the course.
